WCC Students Take Top Honors in National Competition
Thursday, July 3rd, 2008
ANN ARBOR, MI — Over 300,000 students from around the country competed in the Skills USA Automotive Body Repair competition but there can only be one national winner and Washtenaw Community College student Phil Davie of Ann Arbor was it. Last week in Kansas City two other WCC students also came away winners: Joe Young took the silver medal in Welding and Skylar Winter took seventh place in Automotive Refinishing.
"Only students who score in the top two percent make it to the competition in Kansas City and to take top honors having only competed in the Automotive competition once before shows how incredible our program is,” says Gary Sobbry, department chair of the Automotive Body Repair program.

Getting Fit in a Green Way at WCC
Thursday, July 3rd, 2008
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Washtenaw Community College’s efforts to get fit in a green way have paid off with Gold LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for the WCC Health and Fitness Center. The Ann Arbor facility becomes the first of its kind in the state to achieve Gold LEED status, according to WCC Associate Vice President Damon Flowers.
“The Fitness Center is environmentally sustainable and energy efficient,” says Flowers. “Its systems meet the highest levels of LEED certification to reduce energy consumption and employ sustainability practices in its design and construction. A minimum of 39 points are needed to achieve Gold LEED certification, WCC went well above that with 43 points.”
